Inflammation - It’s Personal
Over the last few months, we have been focusing on Inflammation. We’ve discussed types of inflammation, the danger of chronic inflammation, the connection between inflammation and chronic disease, and the steps you can take to reduce inflammation so you can ultimately reduce pain and prevent disease.
But there’s an even bigger reason why I’m so passionate about inflammation.
It’s Personal
The alarming statistic that 3 out of 5 people worldwide die due to chronic inflammatory diseases rings warning bells in my ears. 3 out of 5 people are dying, possibly from preventable illnesses. Now, I understand that not all diseases are preventable but I also understand the connection between chronic inflammation and chronic disease (you do too, if you read last month’s blog). It leads me to believe that if we focus our time and energy on lowering inflammation with an anti-inflammatory lifestyle, we have the ability to prevent unnecessary death.
In 2023, my brother was unexpectedly killed in a tragic accident. This was not related to chronic inflammation but it was my first experience with grief and loss. My brother was a health advocate, always searching for the latest health trends and putting himself first. “Health is wealth”, he always said. While I couldn’t prevent his death, I was left wondering how many other people are experiencing grief and loss from the death of their loved ones. Deaths that could possibly be prevented through lifestyle modifications? That’s worth exploring.
Fast forward exactly one year. The day before the one-year anniversary of my brother’s death, my grandfather passed away. This was a rush of de-ja-vu like I’ve never wanted but it was also such a different experience with death. My grandpa lived a long life, full of many accomplishments. We knew the end was near for him and we had the chance to say goodbye before he passed. While my grandpa did live a long and full life, he also suffered from Type 2 Diabetes. He wasn’t educated on lifestyle factors that could impact his long-term health. After he passed, I was left wondering if there was anything we could have done to keep him here with us longer so he could see his great-grandkids play sports and eat dinners with his wife of 65+ years. You see, lifestyle modifications could have played a role in his healthspan and thus, impacted his lifespan.
Part of the Solution
Knowing that chronic inflammatory diseases cause 3 out 5 deaths worldwide makes me fear that too many people are experiencing grief and loss. When 35% of US adults suffer from chonic inflammation and at least 60% of Americans have at least one chronic condition, there is work to be done to lower inflammation. There are no quick fixes. This is a long-term game. But habits can be formed and can make a great impact.
That’s why I’m so passionate about lowering inflammation. Because for me, it’s personal. And I bet it’s personal for you, too. Think about how many people you know who are impacted by a chronic inflammatory disease. You might even be on that list! If we spend our time and energy focusing on lowering inflammation through an anti-inflammatory lifestyle, think of the impact we could make! I’m not talking about changing genes, I’m talking about modifiable lifestyle factors. Things like nutrition, exercise, sleep, toxin exposure, and stress management.
